Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease characterized by a lack of insulin and/or an impaired insulin action which leads to elevated blood sugar level. It was estimated that 2.4 million Canadians have diabetes in 2009 and it is anticipated that the number of Canadians diagnosed with diabetes will be 3.7 million by 2019.

Elevated blood sugar in diabetes can lead to several and sometimes sight threatening ocular complications. In majority of cases these complications are asymptomatic particularly in the early stages, only comprehensive eye examination can detect these diabetic complications to prevent ocular damage and vision loss.
