Eye Health - Macular Degeneration

Age Related Macular degeneration or ARMD or AMD is the leading cause of blindness in North America. AMD damages the “Macula”, the central most important part of the retina which is responsible for the best vision. This sever and blinding disease is a hereditary disease, in other words it runs in families.

There are two types of ARMD:
1-Dry AMD
2-Wet AMD

In the dry type the degenerative process can lead to macular atrophy and blindness if left untreated. The dry type can be managed by taking certain type of vitamins based on the age related eye disease study “AREDS”. On the other hand the wet type is more aggressive and can lead to bleeding and leakage under the macula. This wet type is now treated by intraocular injection of Anti-VEGF medications.

It is very crucial in such a sever blinding condition to early detect and to early differentiate which type it is, to direct our patients to the appropriate treatment. At Enlight Family Eye Clinic we are equipped with the state of the art technology in order to early detect and accurately diagnose this condition. Our Optical Coherence Tomography “OCT” can take live sections and scans of the retina, macula and the optic nerve to accurately detect any AMD pathology.

If you have any family history of macular degeneration, we do recommend you to get a comprehensive eye exam with us so we can recommend OCT scan if needed.
